Best Android apps 2021: Must have apps for every Android user

With millions of apps on the Play Store, searching for the best among them is daunting. Whether you need a great weather app or a new tool to speed up your productivity, there are always dozens available. We’ve spent hours curating the best Android apps for every purpose and compiled only the best of them into one list.

Note that we have separated these must-have Android apps into several categories and selected one app - which we think is the best - for each app category. You will also find links to separate best lists for apps where you can also look for alternatives to the best Android apps already listed here. Note that this list is US-centric and some of the apps listed here may not be relevant/ available elsewhere.

Indispensable Android apps

Indispensable apps are the ones that most Android users will almost certainly need to install for the smooth functioning of their smartphones. These primarily include key apps like keyboards, browsers, security, and personalization apps. While most of these come pre-installed on Android phones, at times, it is always a good idea to switch to another app that (usually) offers a lot more features than the default ones.

Best keyboard app

Microsoft Swiftkey

While Gboard is definitely the most popular keyboard app on the Android platform, this is largely the case because it comes preinstalled on most Android devices. Before Gboard’s arrival in 2016, SwiftKey was arguably among the most popular third-party keyboard app for Android devices. With over 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store, SwiftKey continues to remain hugely popular. It is also loaded with features and is definitely a great alternative to Gboard.

File managers or file explorers have been common on smartphones for several decades now. While initially used only by power users, File managers have risen in popularity thanks to the open nature of Android. While Google offers its own File Manager within the ‘Files’ app, there are several feature-packed, third-party file manager apps currently available for download. Among these, the one that made the cut to become the chosen one is Solid Explorer.

Best browser

Opera

Before we talk about Opera, let us address the elephant in the room. Yes, Google Chrome for Android is by far the most popular browser for Android users. But it has become so ubiquitous, it is almost not necessary to add it to a list. So consider this one as our pick for the best browser for Android other than Google Chrome. As for Opera, well, they have been in the browser space for a really long time and Opera for Android is a really solid, feature-packed offering.

Best Launcher

Nova Launcher

This app has been a hot favorite among Android users for ages now – and it continues to be the launcher of choice for millions of users. While the main reasons for Nova Launcher’s possibility are its versatility and simplicity, most people we know love it for the sheer number of features it offers.

Grubhub is our choice for the best ‘restaurant’ apps category primarily because it is excellent at what it does. No wonder it is the most popular food ordering app in the US- even ahead of DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Best shopping list app

We also found the app to be quite intuitive. Below you find some more options for you if you feel Out of Milk doesn’t make the cut:

Google Maps

Best Photography Apps

Smartphones have more or less taken over the photography space and have been responsible for the dipping sales figures of most camera-only brands. High-end smartphones sold today boast excellent image and video quality and can satiate the needs of even the most demanding of photographers. The added advantage with phones is that users not only get the option to play around with different camera apps, but they can also use capable image editing tools to make their photos look even better!

Best Multimedia Apps

The modern smartphone is a multimedia powerhouse. It is more than capable of being a wholesome entertainment device thanks to a plethora of apps that let you watch movies, listen to music and even read books. The Google Play Store is filled with several apps that let you be more organized and productive. But how do we separate the best from the rest? Well, that’s what we are here for! Listed below are the best productivity-centric apps across various categories

Best calendar app

Google Calendar

This one wasn’t a hard choice. Google Calendar is a great app and even people who do not really like Google sort of agree to this. The main advantage of Google Calendar - especially if you are deeply entrenched into the Google ecosystem is that you need to do very few manual entries to set your schedule. Google Calendar syncs information and data across several Google apps and does it all in a seamless manner. We can not, therefore, help but recommend Google Calendar over the other options available in the market.

Best email app

Evernote is my most critical Android app. I'm not a fan of how they push their paid programs so hard in the new release. Nor the default home page you can't tweak without their current paid memberships. I do have a paid membership, but it's grandrathered from over a decade ago and gets none of the new "features". Still, the app is a great tool.

As to ereader, I think you succumbed to the walled garden style of thinking. The best e-readers are the independent tools like FBReader and Librera. More format support, better controls, less snooping. Use Calibre on your desktop/notebook with the appropriate plugin from ApprenticeAlf and free your reading experience and book supply chain.

  • Michael Meissner Oct 24, 2018 Link to comment

I am a simple man. I see McAfee on a "best apps" list and I cringe. Avast is good, probably the best aside from Kaspersky; good for those who believe politicians enough to distrust Kaspersky. I'd also highly recommend Malwarebytes to everyone, as a secondary protection.

There are other underwhelming picks that I'd love to argue, but seriously, McAfee? "Best Apps"? Eww.

Kustom Live Wallpaper, or KLWP might be the single most amazing app for customizing your phone ever created. There is a learning curve but if you like to theme your phone there is no question this is the way to go.
It's like uccw and Zooper combined, on steroids with next to no battery drain. It has absolutely endless possibilities, it's updated constantly and has an amazing community on G+ as well as tons of videos on YouTube showing how to use it. You can also download professional and amazing looking themes from the Play Store to load onto it if you don't want to make your own.

For music streaming, Audials is fantastic!
Available for many platforms, but free, no ads Android app in playstore is great. Over one hundred thousand stations, & podcasts. Best feature, recording while listening or scheduled recording in the background. Only broadcast stations have the usual ads, but I rarely hear any on the streams I choose.

Updated: Lot of good ones here, some will be contentious. I dropped Open Camera and adopted Snap Camera HDR (Marginz) as default app because it includes customizable GUI with presets, and JPEG controls for wavelet denoise, along and sliders for sharpening, saturation and contrast. I keep comfortable, familiar Camera FV-5 for lossless PNG format. Snap and Bacon Camera actually force my Camera1 API phone to make good lossless DNGs. The main keyboard feature I want is a simple extra row of numbers across the top instead of long press or a second board - several good ones have it.

In Canada the only reliable weather source is Environment Canada, and Fish & Whistle's nicely made free Canada Weather is the only app to link to it. Users with public library cards should see what apps the library provides free - I use Hoopla - 9 downloads/month no charge - surprised at the number of movies I like (offers TV, music and comics as well). Several ereading apps (OverDrive, RBDigital, PressReader), Naxos Jazz and Music streaming, etc. all of which are free with a library number, subscription charges without. You guys might want to do a report on free public library apps for your readers.

I think, you forget to include cache cleaning apps. why these are so important? because these apps are the only thing who can save my mobile's memory and maintain my battery otherwise my mobile will getting slow and junk files will harm my phone's battery and processor. IMHO, this can be cause of your mobile death. My top 5 cache cleaning apps are:

    Nitro Boost and Cleaner
    CCleaner

HERMIT .That's the app you are looking for.Try to buy it (less than 5 $) instead of going with a free version to unlock its full potential. All my shopping apps- Amazon ,E bay etc as well as others like Facebook,Twitter ,Deviant-art ...they are all now within HERMIT. Polyneed seems to be a startup app built with the Indian consumer in mind (only 100 downloads ).Hermit is an app with history and the number of people using it is very high .It's now polished and has Ad-blocking ,Fullscreen and a bevy of seemingly useless features .Why don't they (Androidpit geeks) put it here ,I wonder...

There’s this awesome app called GrabPoints. In a nutshell they pay you for trying out new apps and answering a couple of surveys. I love using it because they are always active on social media giving out points and the rewards are always fair. Like just for signing up you already get $1 then if you use a friend’s invite code you get 500 PTS and easy AND your friend gets points in return too! See even simply inviting people earns you money. If you ever happen to try GRABPOINTS please use my invite code: S6FMAC Hope this helps!

Please advise how we can get our Lock Screen App reviewed.
It allows users to unlock their Android smartphone with their Instagram photos as a memorable and secure way of protecting their phone.
The clever bit is the security where the keypad uses the same photos but they are in a different order each time the user logs in. This turns the same password sequence into a one-time password for every login.
It can be downloaded from Google's Play Store by searching 'IconLogin' or from our website www.iconlogin.com
    Thanks for any advice.

There are a number of apps you've missed like Pi music player it has bass boost an EQ and an built in ring tone maker that works quite well. Far and away the best launcher is Apex. I've tried just about all of them and Apex is the best IMHO. ES Global removed the adds. I like ES file explorers functionality and the look of the classic theme (which is not available in the pro version sadly). The biggest plus for me is it handles the handoff of streaming video over my LAN from a windows share to the VLC app seamlessly. Sorry it's not getting uninstalled on my phone. If you like live wallpaper Earth-Moon pro is awesome. Also if you like to lock apps away from prying eyes Smart Applock pro is the best there is. I like the feature where it takes the intruders picture when they can't guess your passcode/pattern. Rotation Control by CrapeMyrtle is a very good rotation control program that places it's control mechanism in your notification drop down. Also has app rotation protection that won't let apps rotate the screen. The only app missing on this list is a good alternative to the stock phone app. All the ones I have tried are lacking.

    • Mark G. Jun 15, 2016 Link to comment

How often do you think you'll catch someone trying to access the locked apps? Don't you use a lock screen password? Do you often have strangers (or anyone else you might know) accessing your device?

These apps can be useful to alleviate paranoia but in reality the majority of users should have no need to waste storage and resources by installing these types of apps.

      Peace ✌

It's difficult to gauge the rest of the list, are you paid to promote the above mentioned apps? Or are they apps that you genuinely use everyday?

    AntiVirus app? Really?

Come on Androidpit, give us a list of viruses on Android. Better still, scribe a well-researched article about viruses on Android. You could could start by explaining how Android uses a 'sandbox' to run apps and what the pros and cons of this approach are.

Research might be somewhat challenging for your writers, I suspect.

I am sorry cant agree with the launcher Nova launcher prime is the best launcher made for Android so far.Antivirus apps dont work as helpful as they do in pcs and android has inbuilt security Google scans the app thats been installed or before installing for viruses so i dont think antivirus app helps.I dont agree with the Google drive as cloud storage is not safe as already google steals our data Its better to download tresorit which is safe as it offers end to end encryption for file uploading and downloading as well and more than millions of people tried to hack it but they couldnt they are so strong that they offer $50,000 for who hacks it and also ES FILE MANAGER OR EXPLORER PRO IS BEST NO MATTER WHAT.

Agree on action launcher 3, its just a money grab by the developer. just read the comments/review on google play and you can see its abandon, the last update was last year and all the problems highlighted by its users were ignored. very soon there will be ACTION LAUNCHER 4 and you will need to PAY ONE MORE TIME!

Hulu? I thought I heard something about them sharing private information of it's users.
Es File Explorer. Even though I've been using it for years I can't say I'm too happy with the developer. They crippled their app not too long ago so users would buy the pro version. What they should have done was offer more features for the pro version. The pro version is well worth $4.
For cloud storage app I use Es File Explorer and whatever cloud service I want.
Next Lock Screen, according to the Play Store reviews, latest update is not good.

I didn't see a category for Best Deals App, which helps people to find the best deals. There are many daily deals apps or coupon apps, but here is a very different one: DealsWatchDog. (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dealswatchdog.dealswatchdog&hl=en) The idea is that you enter what product you want to buy and the current market price for the product, the app will monitor many popular market places 24x7 for the product. If it noticed a better price than the price entered, it will notify the user for the deal. Think about the particular lawn mower you wanted to buy but in no hurry so you decided to wait until there was a sale...

Disclaimer: I'm the developer of this new Android app.

Why is Circle Guess not mentioned here? It is the most recent ground-breaking app for children yet it wasn't mentioned here. It's an easy app for toddlers and up which supposedly teaches them less and greater than numbers. We must not forget that the value of apps for kids rely mainly on how educational it is. Fun and educational must be the benchmark for all children's app. For more info about how to get your kids learn from having fun, download Circle Guess on Appstore, Playstore, or Amazon Appstore. Thanks for this list!! I have been traveling since 2002 and that time technology was not so advanced and we didn't have mobile applications to help while traveling and now there are so many applications that i sometimes get lost in the crowd searching for which are the best. Your list is a good consolidation of best apps!!

From past 2 years I have been using a travel diary called Roadlike. Roadlike is an app that lets me document my day to day moments. It is simple & innovative diary & works in OFFLINE MODE. It is one of my favorite app because it allows me to capture my daily moments & check in at places even in offline with exact locations tagged to it, few photos or a short video and small memory notes.

Also, it does this well when I am in offline mode (due to bad internet connection while travelling to remote areas or traveling internationally).

Link to their website is - www.roadlike.com

They are available on iOS - itunes.apple.com/us/app/roadlike-capture-moments-locations/id916457325?ls=1&mt=8 and

    Android platform - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roadlike.app.

Also, following are my top 6 good travel apps which i use:

    Expensify for managing expense;
    Roadlike for capturing travel moments with check ins, capturing locations, photos & videos;
    PackPoint for not missing out on any item to pack before traveling;
    TripAdvisor for recommendations of hotels & restaurants;
    Expedia for booking travels; and
Pocket for reading while traveling - works in offline.

Be aware though that showbox & popcorntime are illegal - you are downloading copyrighted material which if certain authorities find out could mean a loss of Internet (banned) fines or worse.

Though it is unlikely that they would bother with small time users. It's good to be aware...

It seems like just yesterday that Instagram was adding video. Then direct messaging. And now the image sharing service that made us all fall in love with filters brings enhanced photo editing features that let it compete with the likes of Snapseed. What hasn't changed is the passionate userbase sharing incredible photos from around the world.

Although my favorite hands down is still (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.system.app.uninstaller) its basically a way for you to uninstall apps from android. Highly recommended adding this to the list too.

It is too good to be missed out.

Please don't recommend AVG. It's a mediocre antivirus at best, and they've recently come out and flat out told people they were going to sell their personal info to make up for the fact they're using a free AV. If anything, an AV like Avast, F-Secure, Trend Micro or Webroot would be a much better suggestion.

What an awesome list! A lot of these are already my favorites so I trust your taste and I have several of the recommendations downloading as I type. I've been using Smart Launcher for a few years now and won't use anything else. Same with Swiftkey keyboard which I will put aside for now to test out your recommendation of Flesky. Always gotta try new apps and make sure your favorites aren't outdated ideas that have been improved on by someone else. Usually when I try to find articles like this, I find ones that are simply people being paid to promote an app. This list seems like legit research has gone into it and honest opinion. Great work!

Mr. Editor. It was really nice to know about the information you have shared and all of this information was helpful too. But i have a querry. It keeps bugging me about safety of the android devices when it comes to using a third party app or an app store. So how do you justify that your suggestion to use an alternate for "google play store" called "slide me" will have no breach which would affect the users? I want to use it but since i am more conscious with the security issues, i am asking you this. Hope you don't mind. Please reply with your valuable suggestions.

    • Cindy Dilger Jul 2, 2015 Link to comment

TubeMate gives multiple warnings about there being virus-laden versions out there on the 'Net, and to download it from a reputable source. I had used it before, downloaded from the app store at Amazon. But the last time I updated the app, it asked me to please log into my Google account, which it had never done before. So, already it didn't feel right. I typed maybe one or two characters of my Google password, when I noticed that my password text was completely visible (i.e. it was a cleartext form field). This was clearly a sign of phishing, as the true Google login always masks the password text with asterisks. I immediately exited the app and uninstalled it. My advice: be very careful downloading from third party sources. If you do use them, carefully read reviews and comments, and pay attention to the app's behavior. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Uninstall.

Well, there are too many apps that are missing in this article. For example Mailwise - An Android email exchange app that can help you Sync your mail account for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, GMX, Live.com, MSN, Gmail and even IMAP in seconds.

You can also add Noom Coach to the fitness club. It has got a brilliant look and is too well organized. And what about CM Security? it does more than what you want it to do. Its time to refresh your list by adding the new apps :P

I use Playerpro for my music, it has everything I need (edit, ID3 tags, multi EQ, customised sound settings etc, etc). I would highly recommend it, also X-plore file Manager is a must have!

I have had Poweramp of all of my phones for years and just won't use anything else. At sometime though you have to pay for it so be prepared.
